L1_NDIS Ignite: Frontline Fundamentals

What is positive behaviour support and why do we need restrictive practices? (LMN5a_L1_PBS)

Description

Positive Behaviour Support isn't about changing people, it's about changing the conditions around people so they have the best opportunity to succeed.

Every behaviour happens for a reason. Every interaction is an opportunity to build skills, reduce distress, and protect a person's rights.

This module introduces the foundations of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS), explains why restrictive practices exist, and explores the important role every support worker plays in creating environments where people can thrive.

Remember, there are laws that direct how restrictive practices are used. Section 9 of the NDIS Act 2013 defines a restrictive practice as

‘any practice or intervention that has the effect of restricting the rights or freedom of movement of a person with disability’.

By the end of this online module, you will be able to:

  1. Explain what Positive Behaviour Support is and why it is used.
  2. Recognise behaviour as communication rather than "good" or "bad" behaviour.
  3. Understand the purpose and risks of restrictive practices.
  4. Explain why restrictive practices must always be a last resort.
  5. Identify their role in reducing and eliminating restrictive practices.
  6. Recognise how everyday interactions influence behaviour.
