Safe artificial intelligence (AI) use in support work (MLN5e_L1_Info)

Description

What to check, what to protect and what to say when AI is used during a shift.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is built into many tools we use every day, including search engines, email programs, mobile phones and office software. You may already be using AI without realising it.

In support work, AI may help with approved tasks, but it must never replace your judgement, your relationship with the person or your organisation’s approved systems. Your responsibility is to protect the rights, dignity, safety and privacy of the people you support.

In practice, this means only using AI tools approved by your organisation and following its policies and procedures. Never enter information about a person you support into a personal account or public chatbot. If you are unsure whether a tool or task is approved, or someone asks you to use AI in an unsafe way, stop, speak up and check with your supervisor.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

• check AI-generated content against what actually happened and reliable sources

• recognise information that must not be entered into an unapproved AI tool

• respond when someone suggests using AI in a way that puts a person’s privacy or safety at risk

• explain what to do when you are unsure whether an AI tool is safe or approved
