L1_NDIS Ignite: Frontline Fundamentals

What is empathy (and why it matters in disability support) (MLN1d_L1_empathy)

Description

This micro-learning course helps frontline disability support workers understand what empathy really is and how to use it in everyday NDIS support. The course highlights how empathy improves safety, trust, and quality of life for people with disability.

Learners will explore:

  • how empathy supports the NDIS Code of Conduct, trauma-informed practice, and positive behaviour support.
  • the difference between empathy, sympathy, and pity in plain language
  • what empathy looks like on shift, in real situations
  • how to stay empathetic without burning out

The course focuses on practical actions workers can use during daily routines, challenging behaviours, and moments of distress.

By the end of the course, learners will reflect on their own responses, build awareness of how behaviour communicates need, and commit to one small change that strengthens their empathy in practice.

This course is suitable for workers at all experience levels and is designed to be completed in a short time with immediate, real-world impact.

Empathy is a skill, not a personality trait.

It can be learned, and applied differently depending on the situation.
