Buccal and intranasal midazolam for epilepsy (PA_1_update May 23)

Description

This course provides an essential introduction to the use of buccal and intranasal midazolam for epilepsy management. Midazolam is a short-acting sedative and muscle relaxant used to treat prolonged or repeated seizures, helping to prevent complications such as cognitive impairment and neuronal damage. Buccal and intranasal administration methods are effective, fast-acting, and suitable for use in the community. Providers supporting participants prescribed midazolam must be trained to administer it safely, monitor for side effects and respond appropriately in an emergency.

Course purpose

The purpose of this course is to build understanding of midazolam and its role in seizure management, and to equip providers with the skills to support participants prescribed this medication. It emphasises the importance of epilepsy and emergency medication management plans, safe administration of buccal and intranasal midazolam, and provider obligations in delivering safe, competent and person-centred supports.
